The antibacterial potential of leaf's essential oil (EO) from Brazilian pepper tree (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) against staphylococcal isolates from dogs with otitis externa was evaluated. The minimum inhibitory concentration of EO ranged from 78.1 to 1,250 fg/mL. The oil was analyzed by GC and GC/MS and cytotoxicity tests were carried out with laboratory animals. |

Abstract Ticks represent a large group of pathogen vectors that blood feed on a diversity of hosts. In the Americas, the Ixodidae ticks Amblyomma cajennense are responsible for severe impact on livestock and public health. In the present work, we present the isolation and molecular identification of a group of culturable bacteria associated with A. cajennense eggs from females sampled in distinct geographical sites in southeastern Brazil. Additional comparative analysis of the culturable bacteria from Anocentor nitens, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Ixodes scapularis tick eggs were also performed. 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses identified 17 different bacterial types identified as Serratia marcescens, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Pseudomonas fluorescens,... |

INTRODUCTION: Resistance to macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramins B (MLS B antibiotics) in staphylococci may be due to modification in ribosomal target methylase encoded by erm genes. The expression of MLS B resistance lead to three phenotypes, namely constitutive resistance (cMLS B), inducible resistance (iMLS B), and resistance only to macrolides and streptogramins B (MS B). The iMLS B resistance is the most difficult to detect in the clinical laboratory. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the expression of MLS B resistance and the prevalence of the erm genes among 152 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) from Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. METHODS: Primary MLS B resistance was detected by... |

Canastra cheese is produced from raw cow's milk, and it is made at the farmhouse level using artisanal procedures and natural starters. The aim of this work was to determine the main hygienic-sanitary indicators and enterotoxigenic staphylococcal strains present during the manufacturing of traditional cheese of Serra da Canastra region, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Samples from 10 farms were studied, and they included: water employed in the process, raw milk, natural starters, cheese curd before salting and cheese after five days of ripening. All water samples exhibited faecal coliform contamination above the maximum acceptable value recommended by Brazilian standards. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and sulfite-reducing clostridia were also isolated from the water... |

Enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus strains that were isolated from foods were investigated for their ability to develop direct-tolerance and cross-tolerance to sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride (KCl), lactic acid (LA) and acetic acid (AA) after habituation in sublethal amounts (1/2 of the minimum inhibitory concentration - 1/2 MIC and 1/4 of the minimum inhibitory concentration - 1/4 MIC) of Origanum vulgare L. essential oil (OVEO). The habituation of S. aureus to 1/2 MIC and 1/4 MIC of OVEO did not induce direct-tolerance or cross-tolerance in the tested strains, as assessed by modulation of MIC values. Otherwise, exposing the strains to OVEO at sublethal concentrations maintained or increased the sensitivity of the cells to the tested... |

129 strains of Micrococcaceae were isolated from food of animal origin (minced meat, cakes with confectioner's custard) on Baird-Parker medium. 120 were Staphylococcus and 9 Micrococcus, according to the ID 32 STAPH-System (1989). The results were analyzed using a computer program. 60% of these 120 Staphylococcus strains of animal origin were coagulase positive S. aureus (aurease+, Rapidec Staph technique). 46% were resistant to novobiocin (5 microg/ml), 13 to 44% were identified with negative discordant tests using this micromethod. 44% produced no acetoin, 35% had no urease and 15% no arginine dihydrolase. 48 Staphylococcus strains (40%) were identified as human coagulase negative Staphylococcus species (strains: 39; species: 9) or as animal species... |

The population dynamics of Staphylococcus spp. was studied during the ripening of Canastra Minas cheese at three farms located in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The presence of coagulase (coa), thermonuclease (nuc), and enterotoxin (sea, seb, sec, and sed) genes was investigated in Staphylococcus strains isolated during the 60-day cheese-ripening period. The presence of the staphylococcal enterotoxins A, C, and D was also investigated in the cheese samples. Cheese samples that were matured for 0, 7, 15, 30, and 45 days presented staphylococci counts from 10³ to 10(8)cfu/g. All isolates considered coagulase-positive by physiological tests had the coa gene. However, no association was observed between the results obtained with biochemical tests and those... |

One way of reducing the input of pollutants into the marine environment is to enforce the use of non-toxic antifouling paints in marine protected areas. Thus, the purpose of this study was to detect marine microorganisms that secrete inhibitory substances against bacteria and microalgae to avoid biofouling on manmade structures in La Paz bay, B.C.S., Mexico. The inhibitory potential of 125 bacteria was evaluated against biofilm-forming bacteria. Crude extracts were obtained with methanol and ethyl acetate from 16 bacterial strains that exhibited antagonistic and antibacterial activity in a preliminary screening. Antibacterial and antimicroalgal assays were performed using crude extracts, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined. The... |

The aim of the study was to analyze epidemiological and microbiological aspects of oral colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus of health care workers in a cancer hospital. Interview and saliva sampling were performed with 149 health care workers. Antimicrobial resistance was determined by disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration. Polymerase Chain Reaction, Internal Transcribed Spacer-Polymerase Chain Reaction and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis were performed for genotypic characterization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. Risk factors were determined by logistic regression. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus colonization prevalence was 19.5%, denture wearing (p = 0.03), habit of nail biting (p = 0.04) and preparation and... |
